From a young seeker in Singburi Province to the leader of one of the world's largest Buddhist movements.
Born as Chaiyabun Suddhipol on 22 April 1944, in Singburi Province, Thailand, the young Chaiyabun showed an early inclination toward spiritual inquiry. Growing up in a Buddhist household, he was deeply influenced by the traditions and teachings that surrounded him from childhood.
His early years were marked by an unusual depth of contemplation and a desire to understand the fundamental nature of the mind. While his peers pursued conventional paths, Chaiyabun was drawn toward the monastic life — a calling that would eventually reshape the landscape of Thai Buddhism.
The pivotal moment in his spiritual development came when he became a disciple of Khun Yay Maharatana Upasika Chandra Khonnokyoong, a revered meditation master of the Dhammakaya tradition. Under her guidance, he delved deep into the practice of Dhammakaya meditation, a technique that focuses on finding the center of the body as the gateway to inner peace and enlightenment.
His dedication to practice was extraordinary. He spent countless hours in meditation, gradually developing the profound inner experiences that would later form the foundation of his teachings. The relationship between master and disciple became one of the most significant partnerships in the modern history of Thai Buddhism.

Transitions to the role of Honorary Abbot of Wat Phra Dhammakaya, continuing his spiritual guidance and influence within the tradition.
When Luang Por Dhammajayo assumed the role of abbot of Wat Phra Dhammakaya, he brought with him a vision that transcended the conventional expectations of temple leadership. He saw the temple not merely as a place of worship, but as a center for human transformation.
Under his guidance, the temple grew dramatically — both in physical size and in the scope of its mission. He introduced modern organizational methods, technological innovation, and a global perspective that had rarely been seen in Thai Buddhist institutions.
